The Loon Loft cottage and the main house behind it on a clear spring day

The Loon Loft Cottage

on Pattee Pond

A tiny, serene post-and-beam cottage on Pattee Pond, in Winslow, Maine.

The Cottage

A cozy cottage on a small, private lake.

The cottage from the lake side, with the cathedral window above the sliding doors

Our timber-framed cottage sits right on Pattee Pond in Winslow, with 350 feet of lake frontage and a wide western view that catches the evening sunsets.

Exposed post-and-beam construction throughout, vaulted pine ceiling above the loft, and sliding glass doors facing the pond.

We rent it by the semester to visiting Colby faculty and other quiet guests who want a real Maine cottage for a few months. Located at the end of a quiet camp road in the woods, six miles from campus and downtown Waterville.

Built small, on purpose

One-room living, by design.

Tiny living is minimalism with a roof. The point isn't the size, it's not maintaining what you don't need. Less to clean, less to heat, no rooms full of stuff that lives there because it has to live somewhere. Everything is within four steps of everything else, which sounds like a constraint until you've lived in it for a week. Then it starts to feel like the point.

  • Heats in twenty minutes

A heat-pump-only footprint. Comfortable in a January cold snap, and cool again on the warm September days when summer overstays its welcome.

  • Lake View

Sliding glass doors with 350 feet of private lake frontage on Pattee Pond. Western exposure, sunset every clear evening.

  • Storage built in

Drawers built into the sleeping loft, a coatrack by the entry, hooks where you'd want them. The cottage is set up for a long stay, not a weekend.

  • Fifteen minutes to Colby

Six miles by car to campus and downtown Waterville. Far enough out for real quiet. Close enough that errands don't feel like a commute.

What's included

Small home, full life.

The Loon Loft cottage works the way good small houses do. A full kitchen scaled down. Real storage built in. Nothing in the room that isn't pulling weight. Here's what's included, plus a few things that aren't.

Included

  • The Loon Loft cottage is fully furnished
  • Electric, Heat Pump/AC, & Wi-Fi included
  • Queen bed in sleeping loft with large built-in drawers
  • Queen sleeper sofa in living area
  • Full kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, double cast-iron burner, Cuisinart air-fryer toaster oven, and a full set of dishes, cookware, and glassware
  • Bathroom with full tub and shower
  • 55" flat-screen wall-mounted smart TV
  • Reclining swivel chair
  • All linens, blankets, pillows, and towels provided
  • On-site parking
  • Trash and snow removal included

Worth knowing up front

  • No oven (countertop air-fryer toaster oven instead)
  • No dishwasher
  • No closets
  • No laundry on-site
  • Stairs required to reach sleeping loft
  • No pets
  • No smoking
  • No burning candles

These trade-offs are part of what makes a small house work. The right person finds them perfectly fine, and we'd rather have everything on the table now than have anyone surprised on move-in day.

What guests say.

Retreat on the Pond

This was my starting point for my months-long transition to full-time residency in Maine, starting in the middle of February. From the start, the calming energy of the place was a constant during my time there.

The house is wonderful, but the setting is just as lovely. Inside, high ceilings and a loft give you the feeling of a really high-end sleepaway camp, where you happened to be lucky enough to get a whole cabin to yourself. Watching winter melt into spring there was beautiful. I must have taken over 100 pictures from the sliding door, and I could have easily taken hundreds more.

For the specifics: the bed was comfortable and the furniture as well, the bathroom was nice and roomy for a little house, and the kitchen offered a good amount of room to work in. Parking was easy. The host is very kind and accommodating and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

Thanks Sasha!

About the Hosts

Sasha & Brad

Sasha & Brad.

Hi, we're Sasha & Brad, and we built The Loon Loft cottage as a guest house intended to be its own quiet place on the lake for family and friends. We're close enough that we can easily help if you need anything, and far enough that you won't see or hear us.

We lived in the cottage with two of our children from 2019-2022 while building our year round home on the lake. We embraced the minimalist living in our tiny home, even though it was challenging at times to share one bathroom with two teenagers! We certainly shared many memories with them before finally moving into our home and have loved living on the lake during every season. Beautiful foliage from across the lake in the fall, ice fishing in the winter, and swimming, fishing, and kayaking during the summer months. We enjoy sharing our place with our family and love watching our granddaughters swim and fish.

Everyone who stays in our cottage comments on how quiet the lake is and how peaceful it feels to sit and watch the gorgeous sunsets in the evenings.
